Each time we visit Big Sur, we reexperience a sense of awe and reverence for this magnificent coast. Every bend of the 100-mile coastal road brings new revelations.
In 1962, the ground-breaking Coast Master Plan was instituted, ensuring that the narrow road would be limited to two lanes in perpetuity. This, along with other land-use restrictions, has saved Big Sur from development. The region remains essentially as it was a thousand years ago. Today, only about 4,000 people live along the coast and in the Santa Lucia mountains, a region that comprises 1800 square miles.
For more than 50 years, Big Sur has attracted artists, poets, and writers from all over the world. Jack Kerouac, Robinson Jeffers, Henry Miller, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and many others have made this coast their home.
Big Sur Fantasy is scored for 24 violins, 8 violas, 8 cellos, 9 double basses, 3 flutes, English Horn, 3 clarinets, 3 bassoons, timpani, tenor chorus, and soprano soloist.
