One of the notable treasures of Bamberg Cathedral is a 13th century equestrian statue, said to depict King Stephen I of Hungary. Stephen's horse is standing next to the steps to the east choir, and is looking across the nave toward the tomb of his brother-in-law, Holy Roman Emperor (and Saint) Henry II.
Significantly, this is the first monumental statue of a mounted rider to be sculpted since the equestrian statues of Roman antiquity, seven or eight hundred years earlier.
When the cathedral was built (1117 t o1242), the architecture was late Romanesque. In the 17th century, the interior was rebuilt according to baroque design. In addition, the cathedral includes gothic architectural elements.
Bamberg Cathedral’s official name is Bamberger Dom St. Peter und St. Georg.
The text of the piece is the Ingemesco from the traditional Latin Mass (English translation: I groan as one guilty ). The piece is scored for strings, including 24 violins, 8 violas, 8 cellos, and 9 double basses. The chorus includes Sopranos, basses and tenors. An earlier version of Ingemesco is included in my Requiem Mass (2021), 8th movement.
