7th Movement: Recodare
The seventh movement of the Requiem, Recodare, is accompanied by a video tour of the Chiesa di San Fermo in Verona, Italy
Recodare, like each of the composition's movements, was inspired by the beauty and grandeur of some of the world's great cathedrals and churches.
The Text Recodare (Remember) Recodare is from the Dies Irae section of the Requiem liturgy, stanzas 9,10, and 11.
The Composition In C# minor Recodare, my intention is to to evoke the tonal quality of Renaissance polyphony, as different melodic lines join the original somber, chant-like, melody.
The movement is scored for alto chorus, strings (24 violins, 8 violas, 8 cellos, and 9 double basses) and woodwinds (3 flutes, 3 oboes, 1 bassoon).
Latin Text and English Translation
Recordare, Jesu pie,
Quod sum causa tuae viae:
Ne me perdas illa die.
Quaerens me, sedisti, lassus;
Redemisti crucem passus;
Tantus labor non sit cassus.
Juste Judex ultionis,
Donum fac remissionis
Ante diem rationis.
.
Remember, kind Jesus,
my salvation caused Thy suffering;
do not forsake me on that day.
Faint and weary Thou hast sought me,
redeemed me, suffering on the cross;
may such great effort not be in vain.
Righteous judge of vengeance,
grant me the gift of absolution
before the day of retribution.
