13th Movement: Sanctus
The thirteenth movement of the Requiem, Sanctus, is accompanied by a video tour of the Chiesa di Sant' Ignazio di Loyola in Rome.
Sanctus, like each of the composition's 24 movements, was inspired by the beauty and grandeur of some of the world's great cathedrals and churches.
The Text Sanctus (Holy) The Sanctus is believed to have been a late-comer to the Latin rite. It was probably introduced to the Mass in the 400s AD.
The Composition The Sanctus begins pianissimo, with men’s chorus a capella. From the entrance of the women at 1:08, the dynamics increase gradually until the strings join the chorus for the final eight measures of the movement.
The Sanctus is scored for SATB and boy’s choir, 24 violins, 8 violas, 8 cellos, 6 double basses.
